Backup generators are becoming more of a priority in the wake of Sandy.<\/p><\/div>\n

With the hurricane season upon us and the first anniversary Super Storm Sandy approaching, many buildings in the New York City area are gearing up for another season of severe weather. To prepare for a sudden\u2014and possibly extended\u2014loss of power in an emergency, more and more property owners and managers are considering backup generators for their buildings.<\/p>\n

In a recent article in BrickUnderground<\/a>, RAND Energy Team Leader Dave Brijlall, PE discusses what\u2019s involved with a generator installation project. As Dave points out, there are no hard and fast rules for installing a generator, and no two buildings are alike, but some of the main issues are where the generator will be housed and the type of fuel it uses, as well as any rewiring, ventilation, or structural reinforcement requirements. Some of the other points covered include:<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Which buildings are best suited for generators?
\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Size and types of generators
\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Costs and logistics of installation
\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What areas\/systems does a generator power?
\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How much fuel to have on hand
\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Maintenance and safety issues<\/p>\n

While all buildings can benefit by having an uninterrupted power supply, properties in flood zones are particularly vulnerable during a storm or a natural disaster and will likely place a higher priority on having a generator ready to go in an emergency. Regardless of the building\u2019s location, the overriding concern for owners and managers is completing the installation while minimizing capital outlay.<\/p>\n
