Last week RAND held its third\u00a0annual blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross<\/a>. For five hours, our\u00a0Central Meeting Space transformed into a fully operational blood donation center, where we rolled up our sleeves and went to work.<\/p>\n

This year, two of our staff\u00a0were twice as nice and made double red cell donations.\u00a0Double red cell donation is done with\u00a0a special machine that collects red blood cells and returns plasma and platelets to the donor. This allows donors to safely give\u00a0two units of red blood cells during one donation. A benefit to double red cell donation is that donors don't lose the liquid portion of their blood and often feel more hydrated after the procedure.<\/p>\n

A special thanks to our friends at Midboro Management<\/a>, who joined us this year. At the end of the day, we hit our target goal of\u00a022 units (approximately a pint each) of donated blood.\u00a0The Red Cross estimates that the 22 total whole blood units collected have the potential to save up to 66\u00a0lives.<\/p>\n

RAND\u2019s annual blood drive is part of our RAND Gives Back<\/a> program of volunteering and charitable activities. If you are interested in donating blood, contact the American Red Cross<\/a> for more information and locations.<\/p>\n
